Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Site Supervisor, the general labourer plays a key role in every phase of the construction project, while working in compliance with health and safety regulations and legislation. The general labourer will work together with other trades assisting in various civil constructions projects to build and enhance the quality of underground infrastructure services.
Duties and Responsibilities/Qualifications
- Grade 12 diploma or equivalent education/experience
- Assist with excavation work using various hand tools and equipment
- Work safely around utility services including gas, electric, water and sewer
- Assisting with installation of water and sewer infrastructure
- Traffic and pedestrian control through and around jobsite
- Digging trenches using shovels and other hand tools
- Level trench bases using tamping machines
- Operate jackhammers and drills to break up pavement and or rock
- Sweep debris from streets, sidewalks, building grounds and other areas
- Load and unload trucks with supplies and equipment
- Engage in all forms of labour to assist in the successful completion of construction projects from start to finish.
- Assist equipment operators to secure attachments to equipment or truck
- Class ‘G’ driver’s licence
Working Conditions/Physical Demands
- Work is performed outdoors. Must be willing and able to work in inclement weather
- Ability to work in fast paced environment
- Required to stand for extended periods of time, lift heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) on a regular basis, perform repetitive tasks
- Physically capable of walking on uneven terrain, climbing slopes
- Travel required from job site to job site (flexibility to accommodate different work locations)
Health and Safety
- Strong understanding and commitment to health and safety procedures and regulations
- Knowledge of construction safety as outlined in the Occupational Health & Safety Act., Traffic Control and First Aid
- Proper use of Personal Protective Equipment
